Colloidal Silver Uses

For thousands of years, colloidal silver has been used as a treatment for a variety of illnesses. The small silver particles comprising colloidal silver are said to have antimicrobial properties that prove lethal to bacteria, fungi, and viruses. However, unlike other antibiotics, colloidal silver acts by destroying the enzymes that these microorganisms need for metabolizing oxygen. Thus, when these microorganisms come into contact with silver, they suffocate due to lack of oxygen and eventually die.

How Colloidal Silver “Kills” Bacteria

Note that colloidal silver uses are particularly effective against one-celled organisms. As against multi-cellular beings, it is virtually harmless. This forms the basis of the widespread belief that silver colloids are safe to use.

Colloidal silver has a twin approach on destroying bacteria. Because of its special state of perpetual suspension, the silver particles are able to move freely throughout the body. In a 1996 monograph, The Development and Functions of Silver in Water Purification and Disease Control, authored by Richard Davies and Samuel Etris of the Silver Institute, they wrote three deactivation mechanisms that are the core of colloidal silver uses:

Catalytic Oxidation

Due to its extraordinary capacity to absorb oxygen, one of the most remarkable colloidal silver uses is as a catalyst. When placed around bacteria or viruses, it reacts with the sulfhydryl (-S-H) groups. This results in the removal of hydrogen atoms, thus causing the sulfur atoms found in bacteria and viruses to form an R-S-S-R bond, blocking respiration and causing the microorganism to die.

Causing a Reaction in Bacterial Cell Membranes

The ability of colloidal silver as a powerful catalyst may be explained by analyzing the nature of enzymes found in membrane surfaces of bacteria and other one-celled organisms. In the enzyme complex, metals of higher valance can replace a metal of lower valance. Silver, having a valance of plus 2, can thus replace any lower metals, thus preventing the enzyme from performing its normal functions.

Binding with DNA

Another explanation of colloidal silver is based on studies by C.L. Fox and S.M. Modak. For their study, they utilized the bacteria called pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is reputably very difficult to treat. The results of the study revealed that as much as 12% of silver is absorbed in the organism’s DNA, causing a reaction that prevents it from replicating.

Moreover, colloidal silver uses are not restricted to the human body. Countless veterinary studies have been conducted, revealing the potential of colloidal silver uses to rid your pet’s body of infections or at the very least, minimize the risk of catching infections from environmental contaminants.

This ability of colloidal silver to repel contaminants is put into good use in many water purification processes. In fact, NASA utilizes small quantities of silver particles in order to clear water of any contaminants.
